Knowing which type of LED screen technology is right for your next LED screen installation is key, There are many types available as suited to different environments and uses. DIP (Dual In-line Package)

The LED technology called DIP (also known as Through Hole technology). It’s a cylindrical LED with a domed lens at the end of it, and two leads are pushed through a PCB, hence Through Hole. It was used for outdoor screens in the early days, and a combination of red, green and blue to create a pixel. The diodes that you put together to make the pixel, there were just too many of them to get a very tight pixel pitch, so its limit was 12mm or 10mm. DIP is the most robust, the most traditional of LED technologies, but used very little anymore, because of resolution limitations with DIP.

SMD (Surface Mounted Device)

SMD LED technology is a type of LED packaging method that allows for smaller and more efficient LED chips to be mounted directly onto a printed circuit board (PCB). Each LED package contains 3 light emitting semiconductor materials what illuminate when current is passed. SMD LEDs are much smaller in size compared to through-hole LEDs, allowing for higher pixel densities and finer resolution displays. They can be easily mounted on PCBs, making them ideal for applications that require compact and slim designs. The big advantage of SMD is its size, its small so can produce tiles of just 0.4mm pixel pitch. Due to mass production, SMD is generally cheaper too. It does has some disadvantages however, it's prone to damage because of its small size, and has a poorer heat transmission rate, which can result in higher maintenance costs over time. The comparative differences between gold thread and copper thread technology is also a key consideration.

GOB (Glue-on-Board)

This type of LED display technology that uses a unique encapsulation method. In GOB LED screens, the LEDs are directly mounted onto a printed circuit board (PCB), and then encapsulated with a layer of transparent epoxy resin or glue, forming a protective layer that covers the LED chips. The epoxy resin or glue encapsulation in GOB LED screens provides excellent protection against environmental factors such as moisture, dust, and UV radiation, making the screens more durable and long-lasting. Cheaper to manufacture then COB and although its possible to replace individual LED's, its a much difficult process.

COB (Chip-on-Board)

COB (chip on board) technology dates back to the early 2000s, when manufacturers began to realise instead of being soldered to the PCB you could bond it to the PCB, so it bypassed the wave soldering process. One of the biggest advantages of COB is that it can produce higher brightness with lower power consumption per square inch when compared to DIP and SMD. One disadvantage COB has compared to SMD is that more expensive to produce than SMD, and has lower colour uniformity.
